| Poppy
seed (Papaver somniferum) Poppy, Papaver somniferum, also known as the opium or oil poppy, is a tall, robust annual belonging to the poppy family and is indigenous to the eastern Mediterranean region, Asia minor, and central Asia. Since ancient times the red poppy flower has been the symbol of fallen warriors in many countries, alleged to have derives its colour from the blood of the heroes slain in battle. The botanical epithet somniferum means "sleep-bearing" and refers to this plant's narcotic qualities. The
tiny poppy seeds, which have an agreeable nutty flavor and no narcotic properties,
are used as a condiment on rolls, pastry, and baked goods, and are crushed to
produce an edible oil. |
